The US Bureau of Labor Statistics Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) reports that the average turnover rate in the US was 3.2% in 2024. Turnover includes quits, layoffs, discharges, and other separations. Quits are generally voluntary separations initiated by the employee. Layoffs and discharges are involuntary separations initiated by the employer. Other separations include separations due to retirement, death, disability, and transfers to other locations of the same firm.

In December, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported employment rose by 256,000. Employment trended up in healthcare, government, and social assistance. Payroll employment rose by 2.2 million in 2024 (an average monthly gain of 186,000.) The largest growth sectors are below:
- Healthcare added 46,000 jobs in December, with gains in home health care services (+15,000), nursing and residential care facilities (+14,000), and hospitals (+12,000).
- Government employment continued to trend up in December (+33,000). See the US Government Org Chart with links to leadership.
- Employment in Social Assistance increased by 23,000 in December, mostly in individual and family services (+17,000).
The job openings rate, at 4.8 percent, changed little month over month in 2024 but the number of job openings was down by 833,000 over the entire year. The number of job openings increased in professional and business services (+273,000), finance and insurance (+105,000), and private educational services (+38,000) but decreased in information technology and service.
